Valentine’s Day Visit to the Nursing Home

By Paulette Sifford | 04.03.08

On Valentine’s Day 2008, Priscilla Mendez, Robin Gladney, and I had the privilege of visiting the El Paso Health and Rehabilitation Center on Vista Del Sol Drive in El Paso to deliver candy, cards and a bunch of hugs on behalf of the Southwestern International Church of Christ. The residents received special handmade Valentine’s cards made by children in our Kid’s Kingdom classes as well as those made by several families in the church. Priscilla was able to bring her children and niece along and the children especially were an encouragement to the residents of the home. Although we were there to give to them, the residents, in turn, gave us warm smiles, warm hugs and some pretty firm hand grips! Robyn said, “It was nice to be able to pass out cards to the residents. A lot of them spoke only Spanish but they still got the point of it. I think there were approximately 130 residents and although we were not able to personally pass cards out to everyone, the administrator (who was an awesome servant to all the residents) said she would make sure the rest of them received cards as well.” Nina Burnham, the Activity Director of the EPHRC later sent us a touching card, stating, “Your kindness is more than a gift—it’s a blessing. Thank you.” We are planning future visits in for Easter, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day that different Bible Talk groups will be in charge of.
